Greetings friends,
It's always been a bit of a 'chicken and egg' question: which came first, Domaine de Cromey or burgundywine.com? The answer is symbiotic. Each exists because of the other. The story goes back to 1983 when providing wine was an essential component of providing first class hotel barge experiences for the clients of our barge, 'Papilion', touring around the Burgundy canals.
When this experience was brought on land, with the purchase and renovation of our seventeenth century manor house and surrounding hamlet and vineyard, wine became even more important as guests at Domaine de Cromey wanted to continue to enjoy the hidden gem wine experience when they got back home to the US. The Elden Selections wine newsletter developed into burgundywine.com now featuring more than 40 passionate 'hidden gem' winemakers and more than 250 individual wines from more than 60 appellations.
The passion is still the same today. It is about great wine and great food and bringing them to our guests who share that passion. It is a passion that has made the Domaine de Cromey one of the most important culinary and wine destinations in Burgundy.
And still the momentum is building. New vineyards at Domaine de Cromey have given us two harvests that have not only shown us great potential, but also have given us a lot of pleasure and fun. The third harvest - Domaine de Cromey 2024! - will take place in the middle of this month, somewhere around September 15. Watch our social media for updates.
Read on. You'll find articles that are germane to this Cromey vs. burgundywine.com topic.
Like: climate change in Burgundy. Cromey is in the Cotes du Couchois, a good bit higher up than the main part of the Cote d'Or. But young winemakers are clamoring for (now) affordable vineyards in the zone. The buzz says that 'quality is climbing the hill'.
Or: how to open a bottle. You may laugh. We have a friend who fell and broke an arm while badly leveraging a bottle and cork. So take note!
And: Pasta and Risotto recipes...with Burgundy? We may have come to France to study French cuisine, but Ellie's Italian heritage has taken us many times to Italy. And the pairing of Italian food with Burgundy wine is easier than you might think. Nebbiolo and Sangiovese after all are, like Pinot Noir, high acid grapes.
And for a day out (and only a short drive from Cromey), let us take you to the Morvan, in the foothills of the Massif Central, where granite replaces limestone and creates a totally different flora and fauna. It's the equivalent of a National Park in France. |
