The waiting is the hardest part. We told you last month that the wine harvest had finished. And that, at this time of year, thoughts in Burgundy turn to the Hospices de Beaune charity wine auction which takes place every year on the third Sunday of November.
The time between harvest and the Hospices sale is only a few weeks, but they are the longest weeks of the year! News (but not wine) leaks out from time to time, to tease those of us waiting for a first taste of the new vintage. That the Hospices manages to produce 50+ different wines, presentable for sale a little over a month after harvest is, in itself, remarkable. But what they have been doing in the past 10 years, under the stewardship of Ludivine Griveau, is just shy of 'loaves and fishes' on the miracle scale.
Hospices de Beaune wines have always been highly prized and emblematic to the Burgundians. Ludivine Griveau has taken them onto the world stage. Since 2015, she has overseen an unstinting dedication to quality, a clear vision of 'terroir' and specificity, and a judicious and incremental approach to improvements in the vast 150 acres of vineyards that have been entrusted to her. In 2024, after years of work and planning, the entire Hospices production is classified organic for the first time.
If it sounds like we are excited, we are! Buying Hospices wines by the barrel and making shares available to our clients is a very exciting event for us, doing it since 2013. And we'll be there again this year--Sunday 17 November--to add to our already impressive collection of Hospices gems. You can review our favorites, with our tasting notes here.
