Domaine Germain Pere et Fils Saint Romain 'Sous Le Chateau' 2020
This Saint Romain red is from perhaps the best-known vineyard in the appellation: Sous le Chateau’. And with one taste you will understand its justified reputation. Here’s a Pinot that is startlingly charming in its youth. Fresh, clean and delicious. Round, not a hint of green. Full, juicy fruit explodes with youthful acidity. What a mouthful. And then, there, behind all this immediate pleasure, comes a structure which tells you that you want to save a few bottles of this for the future. But that might be hard to do, given the way it’s drinking today.

Domaine Marchand Freres Bourgogne Cote dÓr Rouge Cuvee Eline 2021
Burgundian winemakers who have been at it for generations often produce AOC Bourgogne that reminds you of the village wine where the domain is based. It makes sense, really: older domains are likely to have their vineyards circled close to home. This Domaine Marchand Freres Bourgogne fools you at first. We tend now to think of them as being based in Gevrey-Chambertin. But that is fairly recent. The domain’s roots are in Morey-Saint Denis. And when you taste this Bourgogne, that’s what you taste. A little Morey Saint Denis. Remarkable.

Domaine Les Astrelles Bourgogne Athetes 2022
Exhibits a stunning crimson red hue, indicative of its vibrant youth and Pinot Noir character. It has an immediately engaging with aromas of ripe cherries and a delicate spice profile. The cherry notes are reminiscent of freshly picked fruit, accompanied by subtle hints of cloves and a touch of earthy undertones. Upon tasting, the wine is fleshy and inviting, offering a rich mouthfeel. It showcases a complex structure, more pronounced than its neighbor Les Maladières, providing depth and persistence on the palate. The cherry flavors continue to dominate, interwoven with spicy nuances and a light touch of oak from its aging process. The wine maintains a perfect balance between its robust structure and a delicate, almost ethereal finish, leaving a lasting impression of finesse. Bourgogne "Les Athets" Organic is a beautifully crafted wine with a compelling balance of fruit, spice, and structure. Its fleshy, persistent character combined with delicate nuances makes it an appealing choice for both immediate enjoyment and short-term cellaring (3-5 years). Ideal for pairing with dishes like roasted poultry, mushroom risotto, or soft cheeses.

WHITE WINES
Domaine Gilles Bouton Bourgogne Blanc 2021
Beautiful example of how good regional classified wines can be. The caveat is that the producer must be top quality, small production. Complex citrus on the attack, with good concentration, saline minerality merges with some white pepper into the finish.

Château de Vergisson Pouilly-Fuisse ‘Sur la Roche’ 2019
These are vines from Pierre’s end of the valley, on the slopes of the Vergisson outcrop. The vines, almost 100 years old, were planted by Pierre’s great-grandfather.  And old vines on a parcel like ‘Sur la Roche’ gives a depth and concentration that is hard to believe.  Elegance, tension, freshness, notes of oysters and the sea, iodine. And of course the minerality carries the finish on forever.  Outstanding.  

Domaine Borgeot Cremant de Bourgogne
Don’t call it Champagne. You’ll get us in trouble. But this Borgeot Cremant de Bourgogne is produced in the very same way as those much more expensive wines that we are allowed to call Champagne. A well-made Cremant is a joy. A wine you can pull out for any occasion. And a wine which is made on a more human scale than the millions upon millions of bottles produced by our neighbors to the north. And that’s reason enough to celebrate!
