HOSPICES DE BEAUNE MIXED 6-PACK
When in 1443 Nicolas Rolin, Chancellor to Philippe Le Bon, Duke of Burgundy, with his wife Guigone de Salins founded the Hospices de Beaune to care for the poor, this was, perhaps, the first example of philanthropic care anywhere. Over the centuries numerous donations of vineyards have made the Hospices one of the most important vineyard owners in Burgundy. The wines made from these lands are sold every year at the most famous charity wine auction in the world. Each year, wine professionals and connoisseurs gather in Beaune on the weekend of the third Sunday in November for the purest of Burgundian traditions. Proceeds from the sale are used to fund Beaune’s General Hospital and supporting the ongoing preservation of the Hospices building, now classified as a national monument.
One of the dreams of any Burgundy lover is to one day raise a paddle at the Hospices de Beaune Charity Wine Auction and buy a legend.
Here at burgundywine.com, we have been buying Hospices de Beaune wines since 2013. Here is a unique set of the wines that we have purchased so far. Mixed 6-pack includes 1 bottle of each RED:
Hospices de Beaune 1er Cru 'Cuvee Pierre Floquet' 2019
One of the dreams of any Burgundy lover is to one day raise a paddle at the Hospices de Beaune Charity Wine Auction and buy a legend. The Beaune-Greve premiere cru Cuvee Pierre Floquet is 1.8 acres in the heart of the prestigious Beaune-Greve. Brisk purple. Concentrated fruit on the nose, with a sense of the power to come. The Grèves vineyard offers density of both red and black fruit. This is naturally one of the more tannic wines, with ripe fruit backed by enough acidity, a fine structure here for at least medium term ageing.
Hospices de Beaune Pommard 1er Cru 'Dames de la Charité' 2020
This is the most prestigious of the Hospices de Beaune's impressive presence in Pommard, coming from the premier cru vineyards of Les Rugiens, La Refene, Les Combes Dessus and les Petits Epenots. It's that purple color we associate with Roman emperors' cloaks. The nose is a fine mix of red fruits and blackcurrant, with dark-berry fruit on the attack and black cherry as it develops on the palate. Fine, but earthy and muscular, with a lot of depth and complexity in the long finish.
Hospices de Beaune Pommard Cuvee Suzanne Chaudron 2021
2021 will be rare because of scarcity and renowned for the impeccable work of the Hospices de Beaune winemakers. The first truly Burgundian vintage in more than a decade. A classic Pommard, deep and earthy, with a slight floral hint of neighboring Volnay.
Hospices de Beaune Beaune 1er Cru 'Dames Hospitalières' 2022
Deep ruby with bright reflections. Intense aromas of red fruits such as cherries, raspberries, with delicate floral notes of violet. A hint of spice, cinnamon and clove, with earthy notes that reflect the terroir of Beaune. As it opens up, nuances of oak and toasted almond. The palate is medium-bodied with a balanced structure. The red fruit is vivid, fresh and lively. Fine tannins make a silky mouthfeel, bright acidity lifts the wine. Layers of complexity develop with flavors of ripe strawberry, hints of spice, and a touch of mineral elegance. The finish is long, with lingering red fruit and a touch of vanilla from the oak aging. While approachable now, this wine will benefit from some aging (5–10 years), allowing its tannins to soften and its flavors to evolve further.
Hospices de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru 'Guigone de Salins' 2022
Beautiful ruby color. Aromas of black fruits (blackcurrant, plum), spices and tobacco. Lots of elegance. Very rich, fruity and spicy mouth, long and full-bodied wine. Keep it for up to 10 years.
Hospices de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru 'Blondeau' 2022
Bright mid-purple robe. A good intensity of deep red fruit, with bright acidity, This Cuvée Blondeau is smooth and plush, with a long finish. Some subtle blueberries in the fruit profile. There is a feeling of sunshine here, almost flamboyant.
