We are very excited about this one !!!
First, we will taste an old vine village wine and then move on to a Premier Cru.
The aim of this tasting is to show the difference in Terroir. To do this we are going to mirror all the other factors.
These two wines have the same producer. Therefore they have the same viticulture. Vinification happens in the same place, same yeasts and many other factors are the same.
These two wines also have the same vintage and therefore the same weather.
The one remaining element is terroir. So, let's explore how two wines grown so close together in the same village can express themselves differently. We like to think of two wines like this as two siblings in a family.
The Domaine Jean Maréchal has been making wine in the village of Mercurey since 1570. The Domaine farms 19 acres meticulously. We adore these wines. Their philosophy marries perfectly with our own. The village of Mercurey is probably the most famous wine village in the Côte Chalonnaise. Mercurey has wide ranging soil types and is often described as the whole of Burgundy wrapped into one village.
Some of the questions we will be addressing.....
* The village of Mercurey
* The specific plots and vinifications
* The character of each wine
* How best to taste and identify the connections and contrasts within each wine
* The structure of each wine, how they are similar and different.
* The drinking window of these wines and how they will age
* Other Elden Selection wines where you could explore Terroir with friends and family.
We offer these types of wine tastings during dinners at the Domaine de Cromey. If you would like more information on visiting Burgundy, please contact us.
Domaine Jean Marechal Mercurey 1er Cru Clos l'Eveque 2020:
Delicate pinot color, rich fresh strawberry fruit with hints of undergrowth. Fine tannins show a silky texture, and the balanced acidity brings the red fruit notes high on the palate. Elegant finish.
Domaine Jean Marechal Mercurey Vieilles Vignes 2020:
Assembled from three separate parcels in appellation Mercurey. Open and juicy cherry fruit, a little touch of leather in its backbone. Balanced fruit and acid, mouthwatering and fresh. Lovely long finish all in fruit.
