Past Hospice Auction Barrel Purchase Archive
We have several favorite 'cuvees', and have purchased the same wines on several vintages. But the beauty of the Hospices selection is that every year puts a particular style to the fore. Some years are pure 'Pommard', some years more 'Volnay'. Our purchases reflect our appreciation of the vintage. Which is what Burgundy is all about!
Here are some of our favorite cuvees from the past 10 years. Many of these wines from classic vintages are now available on burgundywine.com.

TASTING NOTES
BEAUNE 1ER CRU DAMES DES HOSPITALIÈRES
Elegant and expressive, offering vibrant aromas of red fruits such as cherry, raspberry, and wild strawberry. On the palate, it showcases soft tannins with a delicate spiciness, along with subtle floral notes like violet. There’s an underlying earthiness and minerality that balances the fruit, giving the wine structure and finesse. Medium-bodied with a bright, refreshing finish.
BEAUNE 1ER CRU GUIGONE DE SALINS
Rich and structured, this wine often features ripe red and dark fruits, such as plum, cherry, and blackberry. Notes of forest floor, leather, and a hint of smoke can also develop as it ages. On the palate, it’s smooth with refined tannins, balanced by good acidity and earthy undertones. A touch of spice (cinnamon, clove) lingers on the finish, making this wine a solid representation of Beaune’s premier cru character.
BEAUNE 1ER CRU NICOLAS ROLIN
This cuvée tends to show great depth and complexity, with a core of black cherry, currants, and dried herbs. There’s often a savory quality, combined with a firm tannic structure and a rich, full-bodied mouthfeel. Earthy notes of truffle and tobacco emerge, especially with some age, adding to its complexity. A long, persistent finish with a hint of spice makes it a wine with good aging potential.
BEAUNE 1ER CRU PIERRE FLOQUET
Delicate and floral, this wine showcases a more elegant side of Beaune. It typically presents aromas of redcurrant, cherry, and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with silky tannins and lively acidity, giving the wine a sense of vibrancy. Flavors of fresh raspberry and subtle herbs add complexity, while the finish is soft and smooth, making it approachable even in its youth.
BEAUNE 1ER CRU CUVÉE BRUNET
Well-rounded and powerful wine with pronounced notes of black fruit, such as blackberry and black cherry, complemented by earthy and spicy undertones. There’s often a richness in texture, with firm tannins and a slightly more robust structure compared to other Beaune premiers crus. Oak aging typically imparts notes of vanilla and toast, giving the wine added depth and a lingering, structured finish.
POMMARD 1ER CRU DAMES DE LA CHARITÉ
Pommard wines are known for their intensity, and this cuvée is no exception. It often displays powerful aromas of black fruits like plum and blackberry, along with earthy notes of leather and truffle. The palate is muscular, with firm tannins and concentrated fruit flavors balanced by refreshing acidity. There’s often a touch of pepper and spice on the finish, giving it a bold, long-lasting profile that benefits from aging.
VOLNAY 1ER CRU SANTENOTS JEHAN DE MASSOL
Graceful and perfumed, with aromas of red cherry, raspberry, and delicate floral notes like rose and violet. The palate is silky and smooth, with soft tannins and a refreshing minerality. Volnay’s hallmark elegance shines through, with a subtle earthiness and spice (clove, cinnamon) that add layers of complexity. The finish is long, with a fine balance between fruit and acidity.
VOLNAY 1ER CRU SANTENOTS CUVÉE GAUVIN
Another fine expression of Volnay charm, this wine offers a slightly more robust character compared to the Jehan de Massol. Ripe red and dark fruits such as strawberry, cherry, and blackberry dominate the nose, with floral and earthy undertones. The tannins are fine-grained but slightly firmer, providing structure. A touch of spice and minerality complements the fruit, leading to a long, elegant finish with good aging potential.
CORTON GRAND CRU DR PESTE
As a Grand Cru, this wine is powerful and structured, with intense aromas of dark fruit—blackberry, blackcurrant, and plum—alongside earthy notes of mushroom, leather, and forest floor. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied, with firm tannins and layers of flavor that develop over time. Oak aging often imparts vanilla and spice, adding to the complexity. The finish is long, with a beautiful balance between fruit, acidity, and tannin, making this a wine with excellent aging potential.
