Summer greetings to all our friends,
July is many things to many people. But in France, the first two weeks of July mean just one thing: the Tour de France. You don't have to know anything about bike racing to appreciate the massive logistical spectacle that is the blur of jerseys as the peloton hurtles through the French countryside. It's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment, but the route is lined elbow-to-elbow with spectators who will wait all day for that rush and that buzz. That route changes every year, to give everyone in France someday their day in the spotlight.
And this year, it's us here at the Domaine de Cromey! On the 4th of July, the most organized sporting event on earth will come flying by on its way from Macon to Dijon, a few kilometers down the hill from Cromey. Then on the 5th, there are time trials between Nuit St Georges and Gevrey Chambertin, a race against the clock, casting the spotlight on the heart of the Burgundy vineyards. And I can't begin to tell you what a big deal this is for your average Burgundian. But read on; we'll try to explain. And that's a perfect segue into our piece about the Tour which also covers planning your own biking trip. Many guests come to Cromey for a cycling holiday while enjoying a wonderful wine and food experience.
As we typically do in every issue we include a piece on our cuisine. This time it is a main course dish featuring meat. We also include a piece about grapes in our 'Why visit Burgundy' series. The grapes of Burgundy are important for many reasons beyond making the wine we drink and we hope you enjoy reading about them. The Tour de France will bring out the best of the region, heart, soul and wine! And to sharpen your taste for the latter, have a look at the third installment of our Palate Advisor. Just one caveat: don't drink and bike. |

WHITE BURGUNDY
Summertime Whites
Get ready to elevate your summer gatherings with our selection of exquisite summertime white Burgundy wines. Whether you're hosting a backyard barbecue or a sophisticated soirée, our handpicked case is designed to make your celebrations unforgettable. Full Case $488
Domaine Germain Pere et Fils Saint Romain Blanc 2021
This Saint Romain white is taken seriously right from the start. Add 30% new oak and 8-9 months of aging and batonnage, and you get a very classy Chardonnay with the unique and superbly subtle Saint Romain minerality, full, rich and dense, with elegant floral notes, good acidity in its youthful charm. We found this wine on a restaurant list in Santenay and were so impressed we went the next day to meet the producers. An excellent bottle. Full Case Now only $625
Discover Puligny-Montrachet White Mixed Case
Many think of Puligny-Montrachet, along with Chassagne-Montrachet, as the most perfect expression of the Chardonnay grape. As always of course, it depends on who makes the wine. But one thing is certain, the premiers crus do have pedigree, with most of them bordering the north side of the grands crus. The village wines are produced mainly in the flat-lands to the west of the village itself. Plots which adjoin the hamlet of Blagny produce a red wine, but in tiny quantities. Full Case $1508 or 6-Pack $754
MIXED RED & WHITE BURGUNDY
July 4th BBQ Mixed Case
With the weather warming up, stock your cellar with this mixed case containing the perfect summer wines. Elevate your next BBQ gathering and leave a lasting impression on friends and family. Full Case Now only $399
RED BURGUNDY
2021 Red Harvest Case
Just as we Burgundy purists begrudgingly acknowledged the vitality and variety of the three previous hot-weather vintages, along came 2021, classic Burgundy. Full Case $590
Domaine Mouton Givry 1er Cru 'Clos Jus' 2021
Domaine Mouton's aptly-named 'Clos Jus' ('jus' means 'juice') is the Mouton wine we go to first. Always ripe and juicy, ready to drink relatively early. Minerality is the key here, from a vineyard with different soil make-up to the rest of the appellation. Dark fruit, earth notes, delicate structure fleshed out to fullness. We appreciate the finesse in the winemaking, an unstinting perfectionism that has been communicated across a generation. The self-effacing Moutons would be the last to admit it, but for us their wines are nearly always perfect. Full Case $708 or 6-Pack $354
Regnaudot Maranges 2021 Red Case
Bernard Regnaudot arrived in Dezizes-les Maranges in 1996, but he is a third-generation vigneron. Soft-spoken and discreet, he works just under 16 acres of vineyards with his son, Florian. He is considered one of the ‘locomotives’ of the appellation Maranges, a tiny strip of vineyards stretching out to the west of Santenay in the direction of the Couchois. A historic vintage in an appellation that is all of the sudden the chou-chou of the Burgundy wine world. Full Case $480 |
