Greetings friends,
It's October in Burgundy. The grapes are in the winery, bubbling away, as we await the first signs that will tell us what the 2024 vintage has in store. Traditionally, one of the first chances to taste the new wine is in the lead-up to the Hospices de Beaune Charity Wine Auction, on the third Sunday in November. It's a red letter day in the Burgundy wine year and a tradition at burgundywine.com since 2013.
2024 is our 11th vintage. Buying, helping others to buy, and arranging for all the concomitant fun, allows us take enthusiastic wine lovers into the inner circles of Burgundy. And that is an indescribable experience for anyone who loves wine and tradition.
For this is the pinnacle of tradition and culture in the world of Burgundy wine. To enter these halls is to become part of the fabric of the region and its history
When in 1443 Nicolas Rolin, Chancellor to Phillipe Le Bon, Duke of Burgundy, with his wife Guigone de Salins founded the Hospices de Beaune to care for the ill and poor, this was, perhaps, the first example of philanthropic care anywhere. Over the centuries, outside funding became necessary. This often came about in the form of legacies and gifts of land, buildings and, importantly, of vineyards. In exchange, of course, for an expedited path to heaven.
The wines made from these very special vineyards are sold every year at this, the most famous charity wine auction in the world. It is the purest of Burgundian traditions. Proceeds from the sale are used to fund Beaune’s General Hospital and health services, as well as to support the ongoing preservation of the original Hospices building built by Nicolas Rolin.
Speaking of the Dukes of Burgundy, read on. This month's newsletter is full of great information about Burgundy, its history, food and wine.
So join us as we celebrate October in Burgundy. The vineyards are glowing crimson and gold here in the Cote d'Or. And the air is full of fermentation and the festivities that come with the new wine. |
